How Algoma actually handles things

If you repeat a course

Which mark they use when you take a course twice.

We will use the highest grade to calculate the admission average.

Summer school, night school, e-learning and private school

Whether courses taken outside your regular day school are treated the same.

We grant equal standing to all courses recognized by the Ministry of Education.

Your Grade 11 marks

Whether they look at Grade 11, and when.

Applicants may receive early offers of admission based on Grade 11 grades. Supplemental Application

Course selection opens online in July 2026. • We assign incoming first-year students an academic advisor and encourage students to contact them prior to July for academic advising. Support for Transition to University

Academic Advising appointments are available for all students as they plan for course registration. Once a student accepts their offer, they will be assigned an advisor and can book a one-on-one session through their student portal.

Automatic entrance scholarships

Money you get for your average without applying for it.

Top 6 Grade 12 U/M courses are automatically considered for our entrance awards. Awards are renewable for up to 4 years, up to the maximum value, if the student maintains an average listed within the award level, based on full-time studies. | www.algomau.ca/awards

Bursaries

We offer a number of bursaries for students through the Financial Aid Office and the Scholarships and Awards Office.

Bursaries have fall application deadlines and we issue them in the winter.

Students can apply through their student portal.

Special consideration

If something happened that affected your marks.

The Assistant Registrar makes special consideration on an individual basis. We encourage students to submit a petition form to the Academic Regulations and Petitions Committee to apply for special consideration.

Deferring your offer

Taking a year before you start.

Students we offer admission to may defer their offer for 1 year, as long as they do not attend any academic institutions (high school or postsecondary) during that year.

AP and IB

AP: Students who completed AP courses in appropriate subjects with a grade of 4 may receive transfer credit. Students must also meet the standard university requirement of six 4U/M courses.

IB: Students who completed IB courses in a Canadian high school may receive transfer credit. To receive transfer credit for a specific course, a student must receive a score of 5 or higher in a Standard Level or Higher Level course and must have achieved a minimum of 28 points in the IB diploma. Students must also meet the standard university requirement of six 4U/M courses.

Changing programs

Bachelor of Social Work now offered at the Brampton Campus. • Bachelor of Arts in Economics now offered at the Brampton Campus. • Bachelor of Computer Science has 2 new specializations: o Data Science and Artificial Intelligence o Immersive Technologies

Transfer credit

English proficiency

International students who have not completed their last 3 years of full-time studies in English in a country where English is an official language must provide an English-language proficiency test score. www.algomau.ca/english-language-requirements

Accepted test scores: o CAEL score of 60+ o IELTS score of 6.0+ (overall and each band) o TOEFL score of: 550+ (paper based) or 83+ (computer or home edition) o Duolingo score of 110: No band below 95 for Bachelor of Arts in Psychology, Bachelor of Science in Biology and Bachelor of Science in Psychology. No band below 90 for all other undergraduate or graduate programs.
