Studying English in Ontario
You can’t always apply to english directly. Some universities admit you straight into it; others admit you into a broad first-year category and you choose english later. That difference is why searching for a major by name can make it look like a university doesn’t offer it.
Apply broad, choose english later
Western University
Apply to Arts & Humanities (EA)
You choose english at the end of first year, during Intent to Register in March.
Apply to Arts & Humanities (EA), which needs only ENG4U. The Department of English and Writing Studies runs the modules the Calendar names English Language and Literature, Creative Writing and English Language and Literature, and Writing Studies (the recruitment site labels the first one 'English Studies'). One thing worth knowing: the School for Advanced Studies in the Arts & Humanities (SASAH) is admitted under the same EA code but needs a statement of interest by February 28, and you must still add a second module after first year.

Apply to Arts (QA)
You choose english during Plan Selection in May at the end of first year.
The plan is called English and Creative Writing — confirmed as the department name in the Arts and Science listing. Creative writing is not a separate admission program at Queen's; it sits inside this plan, chosen after first year through Arts (QA).

Apply to Humanities
You choose english at the end of first year.
The English Major (Literature and Language stream) is open enrolment, but the other two routes are limited: the Specialist needs 73% in ENG110Y1/ENG140Y1/ENG150Y1 or 73% in each of 2.0 credits of 200-level ENG, and the Creative Writing stream of the Major needs 77% on the same courses.

Apply to Humanities
You choose english after first year (4.0 credits).
English, Creative Writing, English Language Linguistics and Game Studies are all inside Humanities. If you want writing as a career skill, Professional Writing and Communication is a different application entirely (CCIT, TMC).

Apply to Social Sciences & Humanities (OUAC TUD)
You choose english end of first year, on ACORN.
Entry point is TUD, not in this dataset. Grade 12 English only, mid 70s (high 70s for co-op). Exception: the five-year Psychology (HBSc) and English (HBA) double degree applies under Psychology & Health Studies (TPS) instead, and you are admitted to it after first year.

Apply to Honours Arts
You choose english at the end of first year.
An Honours Arts major, with writing and rhetoric options chosen when you declare. Students aiming at writing-for-industry careers often compare it against Communication Studies, which is a different major under the same entry code and the same end-of-first-year decision.
