Studying Statistics in Ontario

You can’t always apply to statistics directly. Some universities admit you straight into it; others admit you into a broad first-year category and you choose statistics later. That difference is why searching for a major by name can make it look like a university doesn’t offer it.

Apply broad, choose statistics later

  • Western University

    Apply to Science (ES)

You choose statistics at the end of first year, during Intent to Register in March.

Statistical and Actuarial Sciences sits in the Faculty of Science under code ES — there is no separate stats application. Its modules include Statistics, Actuarial Science, Data Science, Financial Modelling and Applied Statistics.

  • Queen's University

Apply to Science – Mathematics and Data Sciences (QSM)

You choose statistics during Plan Selection in May at the end of first year.

Statistics is a plan in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics, requested after first year. CORRECTION: an earlier version of this mapping said "Data Analytics is a Computing specialization" — there is no Data Analytics specialization at Queen's. The Computing specializations are Cognitive Science, Computing and the Creative Arts, Computing Mathematics and Analytics, and Software Design; the analytics-flavoured one is Computing, Mathematics and Analytics, reached through Computing (QD). CODE CAVEAT: confirm QSM on OUAC.

  • McMaster University

Apply to Mathematics and Statistics Gateway

You choose statistics at the end of first year.

Statistics is not a standalone degree or a Grade 12 application — the program is Honours Mathematics and Statistics – Statistics Specialization, chosen at the end of Level 1. A co-op version exists.

  • University of Toronto — St. George

Apply to Mathematical & Physical Sciences

You choose statistics at the end of first year.

Unlike the Math and Physics majors beside it, the Statistics Major is limited enrolment — you apply after first year and meeting the minimum does not guarantee a place. The program finder shows only 'Major, Minor' because St. George's specialist programs are titled Statistical Science, not Statistics: Specialist in Statistical Science (Theory and Methods), (Methods and Practice) and the Data Science Specialist all exist and are all limited enrolment.

  • University of Toronto — Mississauga

Apply to Mathematical & Computational Sciences

You choose statistics after first year (4.0 credits).

The program is called Applied Statistics (HBSc), reached through the Mathematical & Computational Sciences category — there is no separate statistics application code.

  • University of Waterloo

    Apply to Mathematics

You choose statistics at the end of first year.

Statistics does not appear on Waterloo's list of admission programs — you apply to Mathematics and declare Statistics (or Biostatistics, or Actuarial Science) at the end of first year. Waterloo has one of the largest statistics departments in the country; the absence of a standalone code is not an absence of the program.

Apply straight to statistics

  • Statistics (OUAC TXU)

    U of T (Scarborough)

Statistics has its own admission category and OUAC code, TXU — it is not covered by the Mathematics (TXS) entry point held here, and TXU is missing from this dataset. Direct from high school only; Advanced Functions and Calculus & Vectors required, high 80s. The Statistics POSt is limited-enrolment and requested on ACORN after first year.

Read off each university’s own admissions pages, and covering the seven campuses Ontario students apply to most. Entry structures change — confirm with the university before you build a timetable around one. Search all programs.
