What this leads to
The picture for anthropology as of 2026-08-17, not a description of this particular program.
Archaeological field technicians and junior archaeologists excavate and document sites for consulting firms and government agencies doing cultural resource management. Museum curators and research anthropologists work for institutions and universities analyzing artefacts and conducting ethnographic research with communities.
In its favour
- Entry-level archaeological positions pay around $64,000 in Ontario, with reasonable room to grow
- Most jobs are in education, public administration or consulting—stable sectors with ongoing hiring
- You'll do practical fieldwork early; degree is often enough to start, though many roles want some field experience
Worth knowing
- Many entry-level jobs are term positions (6 months to 1 year), making income unstable at the start
- Almost all career paths eventually want a master's degree; a bachelor's alone limits you to technician and assistant roles
- Automated tools are now doing the data collection and basic analysis work that used to be the core of entry-level jobs, shifting demand toward interpretation roles you won't be ready for fresh from undergrad
How AI is changing this work
Fieldwork automation is already underway: drones, sensors, and AI-powered data analysis tools are replacing manual surveying and routine data processing. This is making traditional entry-level field technician work scarcer. However, the shift toward interpretation and community engagement—the parts that still require human judgment and ethics—creates demand for people who can use AI tools while asking the right questions. You'll need to leave university comfortable with data software and comfortable not being handed a shovel on day one. The field isn't disappearing, but it's shrinking at the bottom and reshaping what starting out looks like.
