What it isMaterials Engineering teaches you how to understand, design, and improve the materials that make up everything from car parts to phone screens. You'll study the science of metals, ceramics, and plastics, and learn how to manufacture them at scale. Unlike general engineering, it focuses specifically on what materials are made of and how to use that knowledge to solve real problems in industry. You study how to design, build, and improve machines and mechanical systems, from engines to robots to aircraft parts. Direct entry means you skip the general first year and go straight into mechanical engineering courses — you don't have to apply again after finishing a foundation year. The program includes a mandatory co-op work term where you spend a semester working in industry. It suits students who know they want mechanical engineering, are strong in math and physics, and want to gain real workplace experience while studying.
