Becoming a teacher in Ontario: the campuses where you can start from Grade 12
Updated August 22, 2026
At six campuses, yes: York, Brock, Laurentian, Nipissing, Windsor and Lakehead admit to concurrent education on the OUAC form. At Laurier, Trent and Ontario Tech you apply to a BA with a teaching stream that guarantees the BEd at a set GPA. Everywhere else — Guelph, Carleton, TMU, Waterloo, U of T — it is second-entry only. The full map is below.

Three routes, and most people only know the slow one
The route everyone knows is consecutive: finish a four-year degree, then apply to a two-year Bachelor of Education, then certify with the Ontario College of Teachers. Six years, two applications, and the BEd application is competitive with no guarantee. That is the only route at Guelph, Carleton, TMU, Waterloo and U of T.
The two routes that start in Grade 12 are less known and worth knowing. Concurrent education: one OUAC code admits you to a bachelor’s degree and the BEd together, five or six years, usually with placements from second or third year. A BA with a teaching stream: you apply to a normal degree that carries an education option, and a stated GPA on graduation guarantees your BEd seat — no second competitive application.

What each concurrent program actually asks
York — one code, then a second form
York’s Concurrent BEd is genuinely direct entry: “one OUAC code” selects both your undergraduate degree and the BEd, with five codes by home faculty. The step students miss: after applying on OUAC you must also submit the Faculty of Education Direct Entry Concurrent Form, with a $50 fee and personal statements, by February 1. Mid-70s average.
Brock — ten codes, limited enrolment
More concurrent routes than any Ontario campus, pairing the BEd with Arts, Science, Child and Youth Studies, Physical Education, Interactive Arts and Recreation, each by teaching division, all at high-80s. In Brock’s words these are “limited enrolment 5-year programs” where “admission is not guaranteed by attainment of the minimum requirements,” and “competitive programs, such as Nursing or Concurrent Education, may not issue early offers” — a quiet February is not a no.
Laurentian — twenty-three codes, English and French
The most in the province: the BEd paired with Arts, Science, Kinesiology, Sport Psychology, Business, Social Work and more, in both languages, almost all at 75%. “A combined BEd & BA degree in five years” with “just under 90 days of practicum.”
Windsor — eleven codes, and a minimum that is not the bar
Nine BA streams at a 75% minimum plus Science and Mathematics at 80%. Windsor’s own page: “minimum average of 75%, with a mean average of 86%,” and “admission is competitive and is not guaranteed with attainment of minimum admission requirements.” Apply on the 86, not the 75.
Nipissing — eighteen codes, with a warning
Concurrent with an undeclared BA, Criminal Justice, Fine Arts, Business, Physical and Health Education and Science, in every division, at 70%. The PHE streams are “a highly competitive, limited-enrollment program.” And Nipissing’s own programme page carries this line: “Changes to the Teacher Education program are forthcoming. Information on this website is subject to change.” Confirm the structure before you apply.
Lakehead — concurrent in name, with a second gate
Open from Grade 12 at 70% as Primary/Junior or Intermediate/Senior, but in Lakehead’s words you “must first complete your Bachelor degree in a partnering discipline” and then “must meet certain academic and non-academic requirements to enter your Two-Year BEd Professional Program.” A seat in the BEd is not yours at admission.
The guaranteed-route campuses
Laurier: apply to Psychology, History, French, Kinesiology, Music or another eligible honours degree with the Teaching Option, take its 4.0 credits, hold a 10.5 GPA on your final ten credits, and a BEd place is guaranteed. Laurier says only students who applied for an honours degree with the Teaching Option are considered for that direct route — so choose it on the application, not later.
Trent: the Teacher Education Stream is 3.5 education credits inside an Honours BA or BSc (codes RTA and RTS, 75% minimum) with placements in years two, three and four. “An average of 85% or higher on their last 10.0 credits” earns “guaranteed admission to the BEd.” Intermediate/Senior also needs two teachable subjects.
Ontario Tech: Educational Studies is a BA, not a BEd, but its Concurrent Education option gives “advanced acceptance into the Consecutive Education program” — a 16-month BEd on graduation, “dependent on GPA and subject specialization requirements.”
